Essend töten wir. Schuldlos sein zu wollen ist gefährlich.
. Menschen sind auch Tiere. Tiere essen nicht alles. Sie essen, was ihnen bekommt und ihre eigene Art nicht zerstört. Ich bin auch ein Tier.
2. Die Nutzung kann nur in industrialisierten Gesellschaften rasch verändert werden. Sie muss dem Überleben unserer Art dienen. Kultur ist nur ein Subsystem der Natur. Wir sind alle Tiere und Teil der Evolution, aus der wir irgendwann wieder ausscheiden werden.
3. Das Tierwohl ist rasch ersichtlich, Gesundheit, Sicherheit, Sozialität und Angstfreiheit sind Kriterien für die Tierhaltung. Zu ihrem und unserem Wohl sollte jede Haltung und auch die Tötung Rücksicht auf den Bewusstseinszustand nehmen.
Und Pflanzen?
Entscheidend ist die Erkenntnis, dass nichts unsere Schuld tilgen kann, sondern dass wir mit ihr leben müssen, am besten im offenen Kampf um die pragmatischste Lösung, die Leid in Kauf nimmt, aber so wenig wie möglich.

Heinz Emmenegger ist 1964 in Luzern geboren. Autor, Bademeister und Nachtwächter. Wuchs ich in Buttisholz und Beromünster auf, wo er 1984 die Matura machte. Danach zwei Jahre Studium in Biologie, zwei Jahre Herumstreunen und zwei Jahre Philosophie dazu. Er hat zwei Töchter, 7 und 24. Beide essen gerne Fleisch.

Eating, we kill. The wish to be innocent is dangerous.
1. Humans are animals, too. Animals do not eat everything. They eat what agrees with them and does not destroy their own species. I am an animal as well.
2. Animal use can only be modified rapidly in industrial societies. Animal use has to serve the survival of our species. Culture is but a subsystem of nature. We all are animals and a part of evolution of which we will drop out of some day.
3. Animal welfare is apparent at once, health, safety, sociality and freedom of fear are criteria for animal husbandry. For the animals’ welfare as well as for our own, any form of keeping animals and of killing them as well should take account of the state of consciousness.
What about plants?
It is crucial to be aware that we cannot wipe away our guilt but have to live with it – in the best case in open battle for the most pragmatic solution: taking suffering into account, but minimising the amount.

Heinz Emmenegger, born 1964 in Lucerne, is an author, a pool attendant, and a night watchman. He graduated from high school in 1984 and subsequently studied biology for two years, spent another two years roaming around and then spent two years studying philosophy. He is the father of two daughters, 8 and 24 years old. Both of them enjoy eating meat.
