Ich bin ohne Tiere aufgewachsen, von zwei mangels Wissen unglücklich vorzeitig beendeten Versuchen mit Ameisen im Terrarium und Goldfischen im Aquarium. Mit dreissig kamen die ersten Katzen in mein Leben, etwas später und für ein paar Jahre mit Garten einige Hühner.
Eingesetzt hab ich mich vor allem für Tiere, die ich nicht kannte und von denen ich vor allem wusste, dass ihr Wohl in Landwirtschaft, Aquakultur und Fischerei mit Füssen getreten wird – von 1985 bis 2000 als Geschäftsleiter der Schweizer Nutztierschutz-Organisation KAGfreiland und von 1997 bis 2023 als Gründer und Präsident von fair-fish. Das Wohl von Fischen und ihrer Umwelt ist bis heute eines meiner zentralen Themen.

I grew up without animals, apart from two unfortunate attempts at keeping ants in a terrarium and goldfish in an aquarium, which ended prematurely due to a lack of knowledge. At the age of thirty, the first cats came into my life, followed a little later by a few chickens for a couple of years when I had a garden.
I have been particularly committed to animals that I did not know and whose welfare I knew was being trampled in agriculture, aquaculture and fisheries — from 1985 to 2000 as director of the Swiss farm animal welfare organisation KAGfreiland and from 1997 to 2023 as founder and president of fair-fish. The welfare of fish and their environment remains one of my core concerns to this day.

Sono cresciuto senza animali, a parte due tentativi infelici e prematuramente interrotti, dovuti alla mia ignoranza, con formiche in un terrario e pesci rossi in un acquario. A trent’anni sono arrivati i primi gatti nella mia vita, poco dopo, e per alcuni anni, con il giardino, anche alcune galline.
Mi sono impegnato soprattutto per gli animali che non conoscevo e di cui sapevo soprattutto che il loro benessere veniva calpestato nell’agricoltura, nell’acquacoltura e nella pesca – dal 1985 al 2000 come direttore dell’organizzazione svizzera per la protezione degli animali da reddito KAGfreiland e dal 1997 al 2023 come fondatore e presidente di fair-fish. Il benessere dei pesci e del loro ambiente è ancora oggi uno dei miei temi più importanti.
