Tiere zu nutzen hat dem Menschen das Überleben in entlegensten Winkeln der Erde erst möglich gemacht. Aber wie wir heute Tiere in Massen ausbeuten und sie zu Wegwerfware degradieren, hat nichts mehr mit Überleben zu tun. Wir denken, wir seien grundverschieden vom Tier. Aber die Übergänge sind fliessend, egal, ob genetisch, anatomisch, biochemisch, physiologisch, verhaltensbiologisch oder spirituell betrachtet. Daher ist es irrational, Tiere als Sachwerte zu betrachten, und es ist unethisch, Tiere ohne echten Bedarf auszubeuten. Die Lösung kann nur sein, unsere tierischen Mitlebewesen nicht allein mit dem Verstand, sondern mit dem Herzen wahrzunehmen. Es ist höchste Zeit, die Stallmauer zwischen Schoss- und Schlachttieren zu durchbrechen.

Daniela Brunner, geboren 1967 in Liestal (BL), Evolutionsbiologin, Umwelt-Ingenieurin und «Teilzeit»-Veganerin, wuchs in einer von argentinischer Esskultur geprägten Auswanderer-familie auf. Mit 17 Jahren trat sie der Nutztierschutzorganisation KAGfreiland bei, in deren Vorstand sie von 2008 bis 2017 tätig war. Organisierte früher Kundgebungen für die Rechte von Schwulen und Lesben. Ist wissenschaftliche Projektleiterin im Umweltamt des Kantons Zürich.

“We” and “animal” is the same

The use of animals has enabled mankind to survive in the most distant corners of the planet. But the contemporary way of exploiting animals in huge quantities and downgrading them to disposable products has nothing to do with survival anymore. We believe ourselves to be fundamentally different from animals, but the transition is gradual, no matter whether we consider genetics, anatomy, biochemistry, physiology, ethology or spirituality. Hence it is irrational to perceive animals as material values, and it is unethical to exploit animals without true need. The only solution consists in perceiving our fellow animal beings not only with our intellect, but also with our hearts. It is high time to break through the wall between pets and slaughter animals.

Daniela Brunner studied Evolutional Biology and Environmental Engineering. Having grown up with Argentinian food culture, she is now a part-time vegan. She was a board member of the Swiss farm animal welfare organisation KAGfreiland and is a research associate of the environmental authority of the Canton of Zurich.
